How to sell your old Xbox so you can buy a new Xbox One X

Monday, April 2, 2018

The original Xbox One launched also three years ago and has since been followed up by a number of successors, with minor alterations and changes.

Most recently, Microsoft has debuted the Xbox One X, which delivers the biggest overhaul to the console's feature set since launch.

During the upgrade process, you might want to unload your old consoles in order to fund its replacement. With so many ways to market your console, finding the best buyer can be more daunting than ever. So how can you get the most for your system? Here are our tips on getting the most for your Xbox One console and the easiest ways to do so.

Where should I sell my console?

A number of different resellers and online auction places are willing to take on second-hand consoles, however, pricing varies between firms. We've compiled guides on the top retailers and websites, in order to maximize your earnings.

In previous years, mid-generation Xbox hardware focused on delivering a new form factor, with a couple of small features thrown in to entice new buyers. Ultimately, up until now, the core gaming experience has stayed the same whether your purchased and Xbox One back in 2013, or last year's revised Xbox One S.

With the Xbox One X on the horizon, this marks a big change for the industry, offering new resources available to push 4K, despite remaining a part of the Xbox One family. As a result, the value of legacy Xbox One hardware drop may more than before, as marketing shifts toward the Xbox One X.

That's not to say there won't be demand for the original Xbox One – starting at $499, for many, it's hard to justify the price point for improved visuals. Selling your console sooner will still return more cash, but we don't see prices significantly fluctuating around launch either. If you're wanting to keep your console until the Xbox One X launch, you won't be losing out on a huge amount in the long term.

1. Reset your console to Factory Settings
As with any modern device, performing a factory reset on your console is a necessity in order to protect your personal data. With Xbox Live profiles tightly integrated into Microsoft's overarching ecosystem, it's crucial that any traces of personal data and erased before handing the console over.

While all of the Xbox One's save data is synced with the cloud, it's recommended that you transfer some of your games and save data over to an external hard drive. Some Xbox One titles clock in at nearly 100GB, so this will save a lot of time when setting up a new console.

Once you've saved any data you wish to recover, your Xbox One console can be reset following the simple steps below.

Warning: This will remove all data from your console.
Open the Settings application
Scroll down to the System tab
Select Console info & updates
Navigate to the Reset console button.
Select the Reset and remove everything option. This will entirely wipe your console to a factory-fresh state.

2. Throw in some games and accessories

Have a spare controller? A cheap headset? Make sure to throw that in with your console! If you're handling the sale of your console, adding unused accessories of any kind will add more value to the overall package (and remove clutter from your life).

From the buyer's eyes, adding extra items will reduce the additional money they have to spend alongside a console. A few games will go a long way too, whether or not they're hugely popular. Putting together enough items to create a basic 'starter kit' for new gamers will not only drive up the package's value but also help you stand out from other sellers.

Do note though, all of your existing peripherals will still remain functional on the Xbox One X if you upgrade. So don't sell that awesome headset thinking it's going to stop working!

3. Clean up your Xbox One

Wherever you plan to sell on your Xbox One, looking the part is always important. A number of quick, yet effective methods can be used to spruce up your console, to add a little extra to the final value.

This is especially important when selling your console via online auction sites, where photos are the only glimpse of the device. Between a quick dust off and some polish to shine up glossy surfaces, your console will be more attractive both in-person and online. Earlier Xbox One consoles, which featured a large glossy top, are more prone to scratches that will be harder to conceal.

That said, make sure your listings are honest and don't hide any major scratching on dents on the console. If you've falsely advertised in your listing, many sites have policies that heavily favor the buyer in a dispute.
