The summer transfer window is open and managers are working hard on their transfer targets so we’ll bring you all the latest gossip from around the globe. Today, Man Utd are hoping to sign Mateo Kovacic…

Manchester United are hoping to sign Mateo Kovacic in a £65m deal this summer after Jose Mourinho made the Real Madrid midfielder his No.1 target, according to a report by TeamTalk.

Kovacic came through the youth ranks at Dinamo Zagreb and developed in to one of the most promising young midfielders in Europe during his two-year spell at Inter Milan to earn a big-money move to Madrid in 2015. However, his time at the Bernabeu hasn’t gone according to plan as he’s struggled to hold down a regular place over the past three years.

The Croatian international started just 10 La Liga games last season with the 24-year-old completing the full ninety minutes on just four occasions and his first team chances don’t look any brighter under new boss Julen Lopetegui so understandably Kovacic is eyeing a fresh start.

The midfielder went public with his desire to leave Madrid last week when he confirmed he was looking to quit the European champions in search of regular first team football ahead of next season.

This revelation has alerted United as TeamTalk are citing a report from the Daily Mail that claims Mourinho is now targetting a swoop for Kovacic after making him his No.1 midfield target this summer.

Mourinho has already snapped-up Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk but with Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini set to leave, United need to bring in two midfielders and it seems Kovacic has emerged as a prime target.

The newspaper says the Croatian star’s release clause is set at an eye-watering £265m but United hope to get a deal agreed closer to £65m given Kovacic’s bit-part role at the Bernabeu.

We’ll have to wait and see how things develop over the coming weeks as no deal will happen before Kovacic is finished representing Croatia at the World Cup finals but I think he’d be an excellent addition to the United squad if they could get a deal agreed.
