Johnny Manziel’s comeback takes another awful turn

Wednesday, August 15, 2018

Johnny Manziel’s step forward may have come with a significant step back.
The quarterback who actually did not play terribly on Saturday, in his second CFL start, is now in the concussion protocol, the Montreal Alouettes announced Wednesday.

Manziel missed Tuesday’s practice after alerting the team to issues he’s suffering from, which are unclear and which he blamed on medication he takes. Manziel has said he has been diagnosed as bipolar.

The Alouettes are concerned, too, with a hit the 25-year-old took in a 24-17 loss to the Ottawa Redblacks.

Halfway through the third quarter, Manziel weaved his way into the end zone, the scramble culminating with a shot to his head, after which he seemed dazed. He did not miss a play.

“It felt like I ran into a brick wall,” Manziel said after his night, in which he went 16-of-26 with 168 passing yards. “Their defense is fast, big and aggressive. They hit hard. I told [teammates] no matter what, you’re not going to take me out like that. I’m going to come back and keep fighting. It’s going to take a lot more.”

Manziel will be monitored in the coming days. The former Browns flameout, who’s eyeing the NFL after a disastrous stint that ended with his release and his settling a domestic-violence case, debuted with Montreal on Aug. 3 in disastrous fashion, throwing four interceptions in the first half.
